Why an Electric Bike?

10 Reasons why you should ride an electric bike.

The are so many reasons why you should be riding an electric bike. Maybe you want to get fit, are looking for a better and cheaper way to get to and from work, maybe you love cycling but need a little bit of extra go these days or maybe you want to get out and explore and enjoy the countryside. Below are our top ten reasons why you should be riding an electric bike.

1. You will cycle more with an electric bike.

Some people may argue that a conventional push bike will keep you fitter but this argument very much depends on how often you use it.

We know from experience that you are more likely to use an electric bike than a conventional bike as the usual limiting factors such as hills and headwinds are no longer obstacles. With a conventional bike these leave the cyclist feeling exhausted. With an electric bike though, you can simply just switch on the power and overcome them with ease.

Add to this just how fun these bikes are to ride and you can see that you will be more motivated to hop on and quickly ride to the local shop, commute to work or go for a impromptu ride in country.

2. Improve your fitness levels.

You may be thinking that electric bikes do not provide you with as good a work out as standard bikes. However, the advantage of electric bikes is that you can build up your fitness gradually. As your fitness levels improve you can switch off the electric motor as and when you like and pedal like a normal bike. You can decide how much effort you want to put in.

Similarly, you can use the assistance to get you up to speed, and then once at that pace you can keep it going yourself without the assistance of the motor. Alternatively, you could use the motor simply just to aid you climbing hills. Not all people will be able to ride a standard bike up hills or particularly enjoy it. Electric bikes make cycling accessible to all.

Furthermore, as you can travel faster than on a conventional bike, you’re more likely to want to travel further distances. Consequently, your muscles will be working for longer periods of time, increasing your endurance.

3. Reduce your transport costs.

The cost of running a car far exceeds the cost of an electric bike.

The AA state that:

The cost of running a car per mile (including Petrol, Tyres, Service labour costs, Replacement parts, Parking and tolls) for the LOWEST band car is 17.5p per mile.

So as the average mileage is about 8000 miles a year, it will cost the average commuter £1400 per annum. Then on top of this you need to add the cost of insurance, tax, breakdown cover and calculate the yearly depreciation of your vehicle and any finance costs.

Electric bikes on the other hand cost from 3p – 7p to fully charge, leaving you with a huge annual saving.

As well as saving money on fuel, you can also save money on gym membership fees as your fitness levels would increase substantially solely through riding the bike.

4. Commute and Arrive fresh

If you are commuting to work then you are not going to want to arrive all hot and sweaty. Using the electric motor means that less effort is required, meaning that will turn up to work still feeling fresh.

If you are feeling energetic you can always turn the assistance down or off completely when you are cycling home.

5. Continue cycling at an older age

As you get older cycling becomes more difficult and challenging, forcing many to give it up. This is a shame as cycling is a great form of relaxation as well as exercise. Electric bikes take the strain out of cycling and are therefore ideal for individuals as they get older. With an electric bike people can carry on cycling until a later age and reap the rewards from it.

6. Quick city travel

Cities are becoming more and more congested, increasing the average commuting time for vehicles. In congested cities traveling by bicycle is more often than not faster than traveling by car. Electric bikes can maintain a higher average speed than a standard bicycle and also take advantage of the same network of cycle facilities.

Most inner city journeys can be made quickly and easily on an electric bike. Therefore, is a car really necessary day to day, just think of the savings in parking and fuel?

7. Enjoy the countryside

We have talked a lot about the benefits of electric bikes for commuters; but there are also many benefits for leisure cyclists. The British countryside is a beautiful place, and a great way to explore it is by bike. However, sometimes it is difficult to really enjoy it when you are struggling to get up a hill or just physically tired. Electric bikes offer a more relaxed ride, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and the fresh air.

8. Reduce your carbon footprint

Now we are in the 21st century, we must be aware of our natural resources and try to limit their usage. Cars are extremely harmful to our environment and contribute massively to the increasing problem of global warming.

To reduce greenhouse emissions and protect our environment, we must turn our attentions towards alternative methods. Electric bikes are one of these favorable methods as they boast zero-emissions technology. By choosing to cycle rather than drive you will be contributing towards a cleaner and safer environment.

9. A motorised form of transport without additional fees and paperwork.

Under EU law electric bikes are treated just the same as conventional bikes. Therefore, the owner is not required to pay road tax, insurance or wear a helmet.
